Why Alloy Steel

Alloy steels contain chromium, nickel, molybdenum or manganese, which let the steel harden deeper and stay tough. For a spiral bevel gear, that means higher load capacity and a longer life than a plain carbon steel of the same size.

Steels We Use

Case-hardening grades such as 16MnCr5, 20MnCr5, SAE 8620 and EN353 are carburised for heavy drives, giving a hard surface over a tough core. Through-hardening grades such as EN19 and EN24 are hardened and tempered for medium duty and for larger gears where a deep, uniform strength is wanted. The grade is selected from the torque, the tooth size and the heat treatment route.

Forged Blanks

For heavy gears we start from forged blanks, whose grain flow follows the shape of the gear and gives better fatigue strength than machining from a plain bar. Smaller gears are cut from rolled bar.

Material Certificate

A mill test certificate for the steel can be supplied with the gears. Tell us at the time of the enquiry.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which alloy steel should I choose?

For heavy, shock-loaded drives choose a carburising grade such as 20MnCr5 or EN353. For medium duty or large gears, EN19 or EN24 hardened and tempered is common. Give us the torque and speed and we recommend one.

Do you supply a material certificate?

Yes, a mill test certificate for the steel can be provided on request.

Is alloy steel always better than carbon steel?

It is stronger and lasts longer under load, but it costs more. For light, slow drives carbon steel can be enough.
