Bevel Gears

A bevel gear is a conical gear that connects shafts which meet at an angle, most often 90 degrees. Straight bevel gears have straight teeth and are simple and economical; spiral bevel gears have curved teeth and run more quietly and with more capacity.

Which One Do You Need

Straight bevel gears suit slow and light drives, hand-operated machines and where the cost is the main concern. For gearboxes running at speed, or for any drive that must be quiet or carry heavy load, a spiral bevel gear is the better choice. If you have a straight bevel drive that has failed, we can often make a spiral replacement if the housing allows, but this needs checking first.

Miter Gears and Crown Gears

Miter gears are bevel gears of equal size at 90 degrees, used simply to turn the drive through a corner. A crown gear is a bevel gear with a very large cone angle. Tell us what you have and we will identify it.

How We Make Them

Blanks are forged or cut from bar, turned and the teeth are cut, followed by heat treatment and finishing to the accuracy you need.

What to Send

A drawing or the worn gear, the material, and the number you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between straight and spiral bevel gears?

Straight bevel teeth are straight and engage along the whole tooth at once. Spiral teeth are curved and engage gradually, so they are quieter and carry more load.

Do you make miter gears?

Yes. Miter gears are bevel gears with equal teeth at 90 degrees, and we make them to drawing or sample.

Can I replace my straight bevel gear with a spiral one?

Sometimes. It depends on the housing, the bearings and the thrust load. Send the details and we will check before quoting.
