An Economical Choice for Moderate Duty
Carbon steel is the simplest and most economical material for spiral bevel gears. It suits conveyors, agricultural and general machinery and other drives where the torque is moderate and shock loads are limited.
Grades
EN8 and EN9 are the common medium-carbon steels. They are normally supplied hardened and tempered, and the teeth can be surface hardened by induction where extra wear resistance is wanted. Higher-carbon grades can be used for specific wear needs.
Limits
Carbon steel does not harden as deeply as alloy steel, so it carries less load for its size. If your drive is heavily shock-loaded, or if you are replacing a gear that failed in service, an alloy steel spiral bevel gear is a better choice.
Lead Time
Carbon steel blanks are readily available, which usually makes these gears quicker to make than alloy gears. We confirm the time with the quotation.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is carbon steel enough?
For moderate torque, steady loads and slow to medium speeds. For heavy or shock-loaded drives we recommend alloy steel.
Can carbon steel gears be hardened?
They can be hardened and tempered, and the tooth surface can be induction hardened. The achievable depth and hardness are less than with alloy steel.
Is carbon steel cheaper?
Yes. Material and machining costs are lower, which makes it a good choice for light and medium-duty drives.
