Where Stainless Bevel Gears Are Used
Stainless steel bevel gears resist rust in wet, salty, chemical and washdown conditions. They are used in marine and offshore equipment, food and beverage machines, pharmaceutical and chemical plant, and water treatment.
Choosing the Grade
SS316 resists chlorides and seawater best. SS304 is suitable for general corrosion resistance. SS410 and SS420 can be hardened and tempered for higher strength and wear resistance, with lower corrosion resistance. SS304 and SS316 cannot be hardened by heat treatment, so their load capacity is limited.
Design Advice
Stainless surfaces can gall, so avoid mating identical grades in the same condition, and use a suitable lubricant. For heavy loads, consider a larger gear or a hardenable grade, and for a drive that is merely damp, a coated alloy steel gear may serve.
Straight or Spiral
Both are available. For quiet and smooth running choose the stainless steel spiral bevel gear.

Can stainless gears carry heavy loads?
