What a Spiral Bevel Gear Does

A spiral bevel gear passes power between two shafts that meet at an angle, most often 90 degrees. Its teeth are curved and slanted, so they come into mesh gradually from one end of the tooth to the other instead of all at once. At any moment more than one tooth pair carries the load, which is why a spiral bevel set runs more quietly and takes more torque than a straight bevel set of the same size.

How We Make Them

Every set starts from the drawing or from measurements taken off your worn gear. The blanks are forged or cut from bar, turned, and then the teeth are cut on a gear-cutting machine. Most sets are then case hardened and finished by lapping or grinding. The pinion and gear are finished together as one pair and marked, so the contact pattern you see on the test bench is the pattern you get in the gearbox.

Where They Are Used

Industrial gearboxes, rolling mill drives, crusher drives, conveyor head stations, machine tool heads, marine auxiliary drives and the final stages of many right-angle reduction units. If the drive turns a corner under load, a spiral bevel pair is usually the first choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you supply the gear and pinion together?

Yes. Spiral bevel gears work as a pair, so we cut, finish and mark the gear and pinion together as one set. A single gear can be made if you already hold the mating part, but we then need that part, or its complete data, to match it.

Can you copy a worn spiral bevel gear?

Yes. Send the worn gear and its mate if you have it. We measure the teeth, work out the cutter data and make a new set. Heavily worn teeth make this harder, so a second gear from the same machine or the original drawing helps.

What shaft angle can the gears have?

Most sets run at 90 degrees. Other shaft angles are possible when the housing needs them; state the angle on the drawing.
