Why Conveyors Use Bevel Gears
Most belt conveyors are driven by a motor that sits alongside the belt, so the drive has to turn through 90 degrees. A bevel stage, often the first stage of a bevel-helical gearbox, does that. It also takes the starting load of a loaded belt.
What Fails
The bevel stage usually wears first because it runs fastest and sees the starting torque. Worn bearings, wrong backlash and poor lubrication make it worse, and a damaged pair often shows a patchy contact pattern.
