How to Measure a Worn Spiral Bevel Gear

What to Note Down and Photograph Before Sending a Worn Spiral Bevel Gear for Copying.

How to Measure a Worn Spiral Bevel Gear

Keep the Pair

Send both gears if you have them. The mate shows how the teeth were meant to contact and helps us recover the original data.

What to Note Down

Number of teeth on each gear. Outside diameter of each. Face width. Bore diameter, keyway size and any splines. The hand of the spiral on each gear. The direction of rotation seen from the pinion end. The ratio of the gearbox, if known.

Angles and Distances

Shaft angle between the two shafts, which is normally 90 degrees. Mounting distance, the distance from the back of each gear to the point where the shafts cross, measured in the housing if possible.

Material and Hardness

Mark any material details on the old gear. If you do not know the steel, say so; we can test the hardness.

Photographs

Photograph the teeth, the wear pattern and the housing. The wear pattern shows how the pair was running and whether it was set correctly.

Handling

Wash off grease, do not clean the teeth with abrasive, and pack the gears so they do not touch. Call or message us with the details and we will give you the address to courier them to. We reply with a drawing for approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you copy a badly worn gear?

Often yes, especially if the mating gear or the housing details are available. Heavy damage makes it harder.

Do I need to send the housing?

No. The mounting distances and photographs are usually enough.

Send Your Requirement
